A few years ago, I was driving through Indiana and I saw some barn roofs with murals painted on them and I started to wonder if there was a way that we could do the same thing using different color shingles. I had seen this done with names inlaid on roofs and some geometrical designs that follow the pattern of the shingles, but I had never seen any asphalt shingle roof art with straight vertical lines before.
I started to experiment with different roofing products and flashings and came up with a way to do what we wanted to do and have the roof shed water properly. Shortly after we purchased a 120-year-old office building in downtown Kingsley MI located just off the main intersection in town. With the steep slope of the roof and the high exposure of the building, made it a perfect place for a shingle roof mural. We decided on an American flag with the silhouette of an eagle on it as our design. It took us about a day and a half to install after all the calculations and layout had been done. It got a lot of attention around town and really drew a lot of customers to our business.
Since then we have done a couple of other murals including a Mobil Gas logo and most recently we inlaid the Tabernacle church logo on the roof of our church. The guys on my crew and I really enjoy doing shingle art and hope to find more opportunities to do them in the future. I think we can do almost any design, the only limitation that I have found so far is that shingle color selection is limited. Certainteed seems to have one of the best color selection that I have found. They have bright red, blue, white, green, and an assortment of earth tones to choose from. Unfortunately, I have not found a shingle manufacturer that make a yellow shingle or that will make custom colors just for us, but I'm still working on them.
